Career Spotlight This month Acting The Smart Girlz have advice for those seeking the spotlight, since we are in La-La Land after all, from renowned Int'l Talent Manger,
Betty McCormick
Clues about a person’s past and the potential for the future are contained in a résumé. The clues fall into two basic categories: 1) How is the résumé presented? 2) What has this person done to ready [him- or herself] for further work? If something is not quite right, it can subliminally affect how the résumé is reviewed. Formatting is important to the first reading of a résumé. Are the columns straight? Are there columns? Is the spacing proportionate between categories? Is the font the same on the whole résumé? Is the font for the name a nice choice? Did they care about the font they chose for their name? Are words misspelled? Are the headings in the right order? Are the skills or “miscellaneous” organized so I can find out quickly about those attributes that can help get the talent auditions, PR, and opportunities? Are the directors listed for film and TV? Are the production companies listed? Are the roles listed by type and not by name of the role performed? Are the skills qualified? Is the height and weight listed so that I do not have to guess? Do skills and training credits repeat? The end result of the first review of a résumé comes from “Is it too busy looking or is it easy and simple to read?” Is this person ready to get further work? I determine that from the credits, of course, and I look to see if the director and the production company are listed, so I can determine quickly if they are lower-budget films or student films. Nothing wrong with that, but it is good to see credits for what they are and no mystery. Then I do not have to ask. Is training recent? Are skills just a list, or can this person go to an audition and be able to compete with others in that specific area? If they are a singer, what is their vocal range? What are the strong areas of talent and of potential for this person, based on what is found in their résumé? Should I continue further based on what I read in their résumé? All these are clues.
